Golfing Hayward Golf Club

So after our first round of the tournament, me and my brother ended up winning both 9s.  That meant we essentially had gotten half our money back.  We ended up carding a 76 For our first round.  We left Big Fish and hustled over to our next course, Hayward Golf and Tennis Club.  We left the ruggedness of Big Fish to play at an old school country club atmosphere.  Hayward is a very lush course that doesn't have the most variety or dramatic topography but it is excellently maintained and still a fun round of golf.

Originally built in 1924 it underwent renovations in 1998.  It is rated 4 stars by Golf Digest and is also ranked as one of the top 100 value courses by the same publication.  Their website boasts it is the #1 most played course in Northern Wisconsin.  You would never know it by the excellent conditions.

The course offers 4 tees: red, white, blue, and black.  From the tips the course is 6718 yards.  We played from the blues which are 6420 yards.  Most of this courses dangers are the tree lined fairways and bunkers.  There is water on only 4 holes.

Hole 1 is a 373 yard dogleg left par 4.
You can drive through the fairway on the right side off the tee.
Once around the bend, the green slopes from back to front and is unprotected.

Hole 2 is a 326 yard par 4.
A shot to the left of the fairway offers the best angle to this slight dogleg right.

Bunkers left and right of the green require accuracy on this short par 4.

Hole 3 is a 161 yard par 3.  The green is 33 yards deep so pin placement should be taken into your club selection.

Hole 4 is a 497 yard par 5. Aim between the bunkers off the tee.
The shot into the green must avoid front flanking bunkers.
The green is fairly flat and not bad.  It does slope slightly back to front so it is best below the hole.

Hole 5 is a 360 yard par 4.  Split the fairway bunkers off the tee.

The second shot must avoid the flanking bunkers short of the green.

Hole 6 is a 427 yard par 4.  The number 1 handicap it features Out of Bounds along the left side and severely lipped bunkers at the dogleg.
Again the green is flanked by bunkers short.

Hole 7 is a 409 yard par 4.  The hole doglegs right.
The green slopes mildly from the back left to the front right.  In a common theme, bunkers flank the front of the green.

Hole 8 is a 174 yard par 3.  The first hole with water in play, it is located to the right.
A beach right of the hole will catch anything short on that side.
As you can see from my tee shot :)

Hole 9 is a 509 yard par 5.  The hole doglegs left around the bunkers.
Your next shot must carry water and sand left in order to reach the green in 2.  The better bet is to lay up to a good distance for your third shot.
The approach over the pond from the left.
And a shot at a Kevin's lovely back side and Greg putting onto the green.

Hole 10 is a 430 yard par 4.  It is tree lined but fairly straight.
If you like you can pick the garden spot to hit from.
Yes, definitely there is a lane there.

Hole 11 is a 377 yard par 4. A dogleg right, you can cut the corner over the bunker.
The approach is to a green with a single bunker short right.
The back of the green falls off.  The green here is pretty big.

Hole 12 is a 197 yard par 3. A single deep bunker right is to be avoided.

Hole 13 is a 488 yard par 5.  Off the tee, aim at the water tower.
Your second shot should be placed right for the best angle in.
The green here has 2 tiers and is pretty deep.

The course's signature hole 14 is a 161 yard par 3. A carry over the water is required here to a shallow but wide green.
The green seen from the side of the hole.

Hole 15 is a 504 yard par 5.  Heavily tree lined down both sides off the tee.
The hole does dogleg left. Once around the dogleg the green is flanked by bunkers.

Hole 16 is a 278 yard par 4. A dogleg left, you have the option of trying to carry the trees and going fro the green.  A safer bet is to hit out 200 yards to the right center.
The green here slopes back to front.

Hole 17 is my favorite on this course. A 383 yard par 4 it plays straight ahead.
A tree in the fairway marks a hill that drops down before rising back up to the green.  You should be able to drive past this tree and the best location is just right of it.
The second shot will then require an uphill shot to the green.

The finishing hole 18 is a 366 yard par 4.  The fairway rises slightly from the tee and the hole turns slightly left.
The second shot must clear the water front/right of the green.  Bunkers deep left protect the green also.

I continued my good play during this second round.

The second round the 77 scored was enough to win both of these 9 holes also.  Mike and I have now officially won our entry fees back so anything tomorrow is gravy.

Before the tournament it was voted that our team would get 6 strokes per round since my brother is not the best golfer.  With our handicap we finished with a 141 total, which was 6 strokes ahead of the next best team.
