Golfing Inverwood

On Saturday my dad and I went out to play at Inverwood in Invergrove Heights.  Usually this is probably the most common course I play since it always seems easy to get on and they even let you play 9 holes anytime during the weekend.  This year, with all of my Common Man golf rounds we have not played here as much.

It is always fun to get back and play a course you are familiar with.  On this day my back was hurting something awful after having done a serious workout on Thursday involving lots of dead llifts.  Probably not the best thing for the game, but carried on.

Fall is almost upon us and evidence of the fact was apaprent on the course where the leaves are just showing hints of gold and the sumac is starting to turn into the blazing red spectacle that always signal a drawing to the end of the golf season.

The weather was a little bit raw today.  The first cool round since summer started and the first time I broke out the jackey since this spring.

We played with Mark and Darren, a couple of nice guys.  Mark was not much of a golfer and started to half-paly the holes on the back but they were still great to play with.

Inverwoods gigantic putting green.  Not as big as Edinburg USA's putting green but then that is a combined monster for practicing, and the greens of 9 and 18 .

Hole 1, the 526 yard par 5.

Hole 2, still one of the prettiest holes in the metro.

Hole 3, the narrow dogleg right par 4.

The thoroughly protected green on hole 5.

Hole 6's green and the pot bunker front that is so small but easy to hit for some.

Hole 7, a tough uphill tee shot on this par 5.  You must hit near the aiming stick at the top of the hill or your ball will be in trouble.

Hole 8, a hard par 4 if you dont get off the tee well.  Even if you do the uphill second is still a long iron and often into the wind.

Hole 10 is a 484 yard par 4 where hitting long off the tee is probably not smart.  I think the intent is to lay up just short of the bunkers and then make two more solid shots to the green.  Don't go long on the green either or you'll loose Mr. Ball.

Hole 11 a wide open driving hole if you can avoid the bunkers.  Again, long on this green is dead.

Hole 12 is a darn tough par 3, no matter who you are.  240 yards from the blue tees.  Play long.  Take an extra club.  Did I mention don't be short?  Seriously all kinds of problems if you are short, not som many if you are long.  A big green though so getting on is only the first step.

Hole 13, requires a long iron off the tee to carry the water and then a series of platues messes with your mind to the uphill green.

Hole 14 is a Par 5 that doglegs left off the tee.  Aim for the left of the left most bunker but don't go much more than that.  The fairway slopes left towards the trees for those who try to cut the corner.

Hole 17 is a pretty par 3.  It will be even more so when the leaves turn in a couple weeks.

The finishing par 4.  Hitting to the upper left fairway is the garden spot but being straight off the tee is not bad either, it just brings the pond into play on the second shot.

The round was fun but the greens had been aerated recently.  In general they still rolled pretty smooth but I missed an obscenely high number of putts at the end where the ball fell off line due to a bump.  I scored a 86 but I think I probably would have scored around a 81 or 82 had the greens been smooth.  Still it was fun.  I love playing a round with my dad.  To me it does not get much better.
