Blackwolf Run The River Course Holes 4-6

Hole 4
Swan Lake
Par 3
219 | 195 | 185 | 146 | 117 yards

After coming off the number one handicap, there is no respite as you step onto the tee of the first par 3.  A longer par 3, your attention will be commanded by the lack of land occupying much of your vision.

There is obviously no room to miss right.  Attempting to bail out left is not a pleasant option either, as several tall mounds wait there.  Anything hit to that area will likely have a terrible lie or worse, could bound left into the long fescue on the perimiter of the hole.

There is a small margin to land the ball short of the green, but the water cuts into the hole making a shot that comes up short more and more dangerous the further you get from the hole.

Hitting the green here also doesn't guarantee a par with the 44 yards front to back that this putting surface features.

Hole 5
Made in Heaven
Par 4
427 | 400 | 388 | 376 | 275 yards

Hopefully you survived relatively unscathed through holes 3 and 4.  As you finish up the 4th hole it is a bit of a hike, or drive, up to the next hole the par 4 5th.  The first thing you see after winding your way to the 5th hole, is the sign, proclaiming this hole "Made in Heaven"  An accurate representation of this gem.

This hole was my favorite on the course.

You tee off up in the trees.  From the elevated tees so 80 feet or more above the fairway, the hole stretches out in front of you.  I had the good fortune of having a brilliant backdrop of fall colors behind the hole.  Fly fishermen plied their lines tranquilly in the Sheboygen on the far right periphery of the hole.  The fairway runs below you uphill back to the green perched atop a massive hill.

As you tee up your ball, the landing area laid out below you, is dominated by an enormous bunker sitting below the right edge of the fairway. The hole falls off steeply from the fairway down to this sandy pit. Another bunker sits up the left side closer to the hole.  That left bunker is around 280 yards from the tees and should be a lot less of a problem than the beast on the right.

From the fairway the hole rises dramatically to an elevated green.  To the right of the green is a massive drop off.  I had the  misfortune of hitting my tee shot into the right bunker and then my second shot down right of the green.  That shot from there is not easy.  The green is probably 30 feet above you and you have the narrow direction of the green to play onto.

If lucky enough to play your second shot from the fairway, your next shot is no picnic.  The green still plays uphill and offers a bit of a split level from front to back.

This is just a great, great hole.

As we teed off on 5 Paul discovered that he no longer had his phone.  After a frantic couple of minutes he decided he remembered he had set it down on the second tee after taking pictures back by the dam.  We drove all the way back, getting to look over the 4th, 3rd, and 2nd holes again.  We found the phone, right where we left it.  Apparently no one behind us was playing from as far back as we were.  I had to post this one.  Sorry Paul!

Hole 6
Jackknife
Par 4
388 | 361 | 333 | 308 | 265 yards

A big bending dogleg right is featured on this hole.  Even from the back tees it is possible to hit through the fairway on your drive.  It may be advisable to take something less than driver.  I played driver and did run through the fairway but luckily stopped in the vary narrow strip of rough down the left side.  Beyond that small rough is the cart path and then the hole falls off into a tree filled valley.  To the extreme left, before the dogleg the giant bunker from the next hole comes into play.

Down the right side of the hole trees divide the hole from the river that winds through, giving this hole its shape.  The right side also offers a couple of bunkers tucked between the fairway and the trees.

A strategic tee shot, play left and have a longer iron in, or take on the trees and the sand on the right a bit more for a shorter approach in.

As you turn the corner on the hole your view is dominated by the world's tallest flagpole at the Accuity headquarters a short distance away.  That flagpole is 400 feet tall, about 100 feet taller than the Statue of Liberty.  The day we played it was at half-mast as a result of a State proclamation that the Flag of the United States and the Flag of the State of Wisconsin Be Flown at Half-Staff as a Mark of Respect for the Firefighters of the state of Wisconsin Who Have Given Their Lives in the Line of Duty.

Back to the hole, the turn undulates up to the green here which is protected down the right side by a sunken bunker that serves to protect most of this green, which is turned 90 degrees from the fairway.  From the far left side of the hole this bunker is mostly taken out of play, but if played down the front or right this bunker is the approach shot's central defense.  This green does slope back right to front left.
